Project Overview
Located inside the NEC in Birmingham, one of the UK’s busiest exhibition venues, the Wetherspoon’s bar required a fast exterior refresh to bring its appearance back in line with the brand.
The venue’s large wall panels had a dull grey finish that no longer reflected Wetherspoon’s visual identity. Fusion Surfaces was appointed to upgrade the panels quickly and efficiently, without affecting the operation of the venue or creating unnecessary disruption inside a busy live environment.
Rather than removing and replacing the existing wall panels, the project focused on exterior wall panel refurbishment using architectural vinyl wrapping. This provided a quicker, cleaner way to achieve the required finish while keeping the existing structure in place.
Goals and Site Constraints
The goal of the project was to transform the venue’s external appearance by changing the wall panels to Wetherspoon’s Oxford Blue, helping create a stronger and more recognisable brand presence within the NEC.
Because the NEC remains busy throughout the day and into the evening, timing was critical. The works needed to be completed outside operating hours so the venue could continue trading without disruption. That meant the installation had to take place overnight, within a very tight working window.
Replacing the panels would have created more disruption, higher cost and unnecessary waste. Refurbishment offered a much faster and more practical solution.
Scope of Refurbishment
This project involved the refurbishment of three large exterior wall panel sections at Wetherspoon’s NEC Birmingham.
The existing grey panels were upgraded using architectural vinyl wrapping, allowing the venue to achieve the new Oxford Blue finish without removing the wall structures beneath.
The scope of works included:
- refurbishment of 3 large exterior wall panel sections
- colour change from grey to Oxford Blue
- installation carried out overnight
- completion by 2 installers
- retention of the existing panels rather than replacement
Delivery Process
Timing was central to the success of the project. Because of the constant footfall at the NEC during the day, the installation was scheduled to take place overnight once the venue had closed.
Two installers completed the work, allowing the project to be delivered safely and efficiently within the available access window. Working methodically across the three large wall sections, the team prepared and wrapped the panels in just a few hours.
By morning, the transformation was complete and the venue was ready to open as usual.
Results and Measurable Outcomes
The finished refurbishment delivered an immediate visual improvement. The tired grey panels were replaced with a bold Oxford Blue finish that now aligns much more closely with the Wetherspoon’s brand.
The project delivered several clear benefits:
- 3 large exterior wall panel sections upgraded
- installation completed overnight
- no disruption to customers or venue operations
- brand colour restored across the façade
- existing panels retained rather than replaced
By keeping the original panel structures in place, the project also reduced waste and supported a more sustainable approach to refurbishment.
This project is a strong example of how exterior wall panel refurbishment can deliver a fast brand transformation for busy hospitality venues without the cost and disruption of replacement.
