Student Accommodation Bedroom Refurbishment

Fusion Surfaces logo – Vinyl wrapping experts providing stylish and durable solutions for various spaces.

The Brief

A national student accommodation provider in Edinburgh required a large-scale student accommodation bedroom refurbishment ahead of the new academic year.

Existing red wall panels and wardrobe doors no longer aligned with the updated design vision. However, removing and replacing the fitted elements would have added cost, waste and programme risk. Therefore, the client sought a faster solution that would modernise 213 bedrooms within a strict summer turnaround window.

Location:
Edinburgh
Duration:
3 weeks
Sector:
Student Accommodation

The Solution

Fusion Surfaces proposed upgrading wardrobes and wall panels using commercial vinyl wrapping rather than replacing joinery.

Before full rollout, a trial room was wrapped to demonstrate finish quality and durability. Once approved, installation began across all 213 bedrooms using a clay soft-matte architectural film from the Metamark MiA range.

As a result, the bold red finishes were transformed into a calm, neutral aesthetic that aligned with contemporary student living expectations.

The Process

The refurbishment programme ran over three weeks, with more than 1,200 metres of vinyl installed across wardrobes and wall panels.

Each surface was carefully prepared before application to ensure durability and long-term performance. Meanwhile, coordination with site teams allowed progress to remain on schedule without delaying other refurbishment works.

Because the existing panels remained in place, disruption remained minimal throughout the project.

The Transformation

Following completion, the bedrooms presented a significantly updated and cohesive interior.

Previously dominant red panels were replaced by a soft neutral finish that improved light balance and perceived space. Importantly, the student accommodation bedroom refurbishment delivered the impact of a full redesign without structural alteration.

Students returned to refreshed accommodation that felt contemporary and well maintained.

Client Advantages

The refurbishment approach delivered measurable benefits:

  • 213 bedrooms upgraded within a three-week programme

  • Reduced cost compared with replacing joinery

  • Minimal waste through reuse of existing panels

  • Faster delivery within the summer turnaround window

  • Consistent finish across all rooms

Furthermore, vinyl wrapping allowed the client to modernise interiors while protecting the long-term value of the building’s assets.

Co-Founder

Older than the rest of the team, but not necessarily wiser as she’d like to think. There’s not an activity under the sun that she’s not been willing to have a go at, resulting in a mediocre ukulele player, part-time blogger, one-time skydiver and an unfinished sitcom script. There’s no room for shades of grey in this half of the partnership; everything comes down to looking after people who are important.

Organising tradesmen is not a task for the fainthearted. But recruiting the right tradesmen, ones who align with our values and are highly skilled at what they do makes for a much more harmonious project management process. Rosie’s role begins with a meeting to discuss your requirements, providing you with a quotation and carries through to the on-site management of your project.

She’s the only Southerner on the team, but we try not to hold it against her too much. If anything, we’ve enjoyed introducing Jade to a vast number of pie shops now she’s a Northern resident. Standing at a phenomenal 5’2”, she is living proof that big things come in small packages; a mix of infectious enthusiasm, laughter, loyalty, authority and uncanny Theresa May impressions.

Communicating with our clients is Jade’s forte. Being highly organised and placing customer satisfaction at the forefront of everything she does means that from enquiry to completion, your queries will be dealt with efficiently. For an in depth knowledge of the material specification of our interior film, Jade is your woman. She will put your mind at rest that not only do we install this product, but we make sure that is the most suitable for your needs.
