Lecture Theatre Refurbishment
The Brief
The University of Leeds required a lecture theatre refurbishment to upgrade worn teaching spaces without replacing existing furniture.
Lecture theatre tables, fronting panels and exposed elements showed visible signs of wear after years of intensive daily use. However, removing and replacing fixed furniture would have caused unnecessary disruption and increased project costs. Therefore, the university sought a refurbishment solution that would restore appearance while maintaining programme efficiency.
The Solution
Fusion Surfaces proposed refurbishing the existing furniture using commercial vinyl wrapping rather than replacement.
More than 150 metres of architectural film were installed across lecture theatre tables, floor-facing panels and exposed fronting elements. Before installation began, damaged surfaces were carefully filled, sanded and prepared to ensure a smooth final finish.
As a result, the refurbished furniture achieved the appearance of newly manufactured installations while retaining the original structure.
The Process
With access confirmed, the team completed installation over four days while working efficiently within the university environment.
Preparation formed a critical stage of the project. Surfaces were repaired, levelled and cleaned before film application began. Consequently, the vinyl adhered seamlessly across complex shapes and high-contact areas.
Because refurbishment took place in situ, disruption remained minimal and the teaching spaces returned to use quickly.
The Transformation
Following completion, the lecture theatre presented a clean and contemporary learning environment.
Previously chipped and worn furniture was transformed into cohesive, durable surfaces suited to modern academic spaces. Importantly, the lecture theatre refurbishment delivered a full visual upgrade without demolition or replacement works.
Students and lecturers now benefit from an improved environment that reflects the university’s commitment to high-quality learning facilities.

Client Advantages
The refurbishment approach delivered several operational benefits:
Rapid installation completed within four days
Significant savings compared with replacing fixed furniture
Minimal disruption to university operations
Extended lifespan of existing assets
Durable finishes designed for high-use environments
Furthermore, refurbishing rather than replacing reduced material waste while maintaining programme timelines.
Conclusion
The University of Leeds project demonstrates how lecture theatre refurbishment can be delivered efficiently using architectural vinyl wrapping.
By combining detailed surface preparation with precision installation, Fusion Surfaces restored heavily used teaching furniture quickly and effectively. As a result, the university achieved a modernised learning environment without the cost or disruption associated with traditional replacement works.
