Painting or Architectural Film – Cost-Benefit Analysis

Let’s face it, staring at the same old walls, doors and tired furniture in your commercial space can be a real mood killer. The urge to hit refresh and create an inspiring environment is strong. But with a battlefield of renovation options at your feet, choosing the right solution can feel like navigating a design minefield.

Two main contenders often emerge at this point: paint and architectural film. Both promise a dramatic transformation, but at what cost? Let’s have a closer look at the cost-benefit analysis to help you pick the refurbishment champion for your project.

The OG in the Ring: Paint Packs a Punch (But Has Weaknesses)

Paint, the veteran of the renovation world, has been around for centuries, and for good reason. It’s generally the more budget-friendly option upfront, with a colour palette that would make a Skittles factory jealous. Plus, the familiarity factor is undeniable. A paint job can be a budget-saver.

However, paint isn’t without its faults. The application process itself can be a messy, time-consuming beast, especially for larger areas. Think extensive prep work, endless coats, and the constant threat of drips and splatters. Touch-ups become a regular chore, and a full-blown repaint can feel like a major undertaking down the line.

Durability? That’s another pain point. While high-quality options offer decent longevity, they’re susceptible to chipping, peeling, and fading, especially in high-traffic areas. And let’s not forget the not-so-secret weapon paint wields: VOCs. These volatile organic compounds can release harmful fumes, potentially impacting your indoor air quality.

The New Kid on the Block: Architectural Film Steps Up

Architectural film, the innovative newcomer in the renovation ring, is quickly gaining traction. This modern marvel boasts a whole arsenal of benefits that leave paint struggling to keep up. Sure, the upfront cost per square foot might be higher, but architectural film can often be a more strategic investment in the long run.

Here’s why film throws such a strong punch:

  • Speed Demon: Film installation requires minimal surface prep, making it a lightning-fast and less disruptive process compared to painting. This translates to less downtime for your business and potentially lower labour costs.
  • Durability Dynasty: Forget chipping paint! Architectural film is the undisputed champion of durability. It’s scratch and stain resistant, waterproof, and generally outlasts paint by a long shot, especially in areas prone to wear and tear.
  • Design Daredevil: Gone are the days of settling for beige walls. Architectural film comes in a huge array of designs, textures, and finishes. From mimicking the warmth of wood or the coolness of concrete to creating bold, statement-making patterns, the design possibilities are limitless. Plus, some films offer additional superpowers like UV protection.
  • Low-Maintenance Master: Maintaining film is a breeze. It’s typically easier to clean than painted surfaces and requires minimal upkeep. Think wiping away dirt and grime with a simple swipe – no scrubbing necessary.

Beyond the Bottom Line: The Deciding Factors

While cost and benefits are crucial factors, your specific project might have additional considerations that influence your choice:

  • Surface Showdown: Paint adheres well to most surfaces, while film might require a smoother canvas for proper application. Consulting a professional is recommended to ensure compatibility.
  • Project Scale and Complexity: Film shines for large or intricate projects. Its swift installation translates to lower labour costs and quicker turnaround times.
  • Lifespan Legacy: If long-lasting results are your ultimate goal, film’s superior durability often outweighs the initial cost.
  • Maintenance Matchup: If the thought of scrubbing scuff marks off walls makes you want to run for the hills, film’s easy-clean nature might be a major perk.

The Winner?

There’s no single champion when it comes to paint versus architectural film. The best choice depends on your specific project and priorities. Here’s a quick cheat sheet to help you decide:

Prioritising affordability upfront? – Paint might be your winner, especially for smaller, straightforward projects.

Need a speedy turnaround with minimal disruption? – Architectural film’s faster application makes it a strong contender.

Craving long-lasting results and low maintenance? – Film’s durability and easy cleaning capabilities are hard to beat.

Is design versatility a major factor? – With its vast array of styles and textures, architectural film offers unparalleled design freedom.

Ultimately, the choice is yours. But armed with a clear understanding of the cost-benefit analysis for both paint and architectural film, you can confidently choose the refurbishment path that leads to a refreshed, beautiful, and sustainable space.

Rosie Christie

Co-Founder

Older than the rest of the team, but not necessarily wiser as she’d like to think. There’s not an activity under the sun that she’s not been willing to have a go at, resulting in a mediocre ukulele player, part-time blogger, one-time skydiver and an unfinished sitcom script. There’s no room for shades of grey in this half of the partnership; everything comes down to looking after people who are important.

Organising tradesmen is not a task for the fainthearted. But recruiting the right tradesmen, ones who align with our values and are highly skilled at what they do makes for a much more harmonious project management process. Rosie’s role begins with a meeting to discuss your requirements, providing you with a quotation and carries through to the on-site management of your project.
