How does vinyl wrapping reduce waste compared to traditional renovations?

vinyl wrapping reduce waste

Barely a day goes by when the Fusion Surfaces team doesn’t pass a skip outside a commercial refurbishment project, full of perfectly good doors, wardrobes and panels ripped out to be carted off to landfill. All that waste, simply to change how something looks. As a company that takes environmental concerns seriously, that just doesn’t sit right with us. However, there is a better way…

Vinyl wrapping transforms existing fixtures without removing them, offering a cleaner, faster and more sustainable alternative. Rather than throwing out materials that still serve a purpose, wrapping allows you to keep what you already have, updating the appearance without replacing the item itself. It reduces physical waste and the environmental impact of refurbishment.

By wrapping instead of replacing, businesses can cut down on the landfill mountain. A typical renovation might remove timber doors, hardware and cabinetry that are still perfectly functional. Vinyl wrapping preserves these and gives them a new finish, getting the same visual result without unnecessary waste.

A smarter, more sustainable way to renovate

Traditional refurb projects usually take a lot of time, materials and hard work. Wrapping is a quicker, easier option. Why? Because the film goes straight onto the surfaces you already have, which means faster turnaround, lower costs and less harm to the environment.

Plus, high-quality vinyl is built to last. It’s tough enough for busy commercial spaces, resists scratches and fading, and helps you avoid tossing stuff out by making your fixtures last longer.

If your business is trying to hit sustainability goals, vinyl wrapping is a smart move. It helps you get more use out of what you already have and cuts down the need for new materials and polluting manufacturing processes.

Case Study: Staycity Aparthotel, Birmingham

A good example is our work with Staycity Aparthotel in Birmingham. The client was all about keeping things sustainable and wanted to update 15 apartments without creating waste. Each apartment had three internal doors, a wardrobe and a guest-facing door; all still solid, just looking a bit worn.

After testing everything out in one apartment, Staycity gave Fusion Surfaces the green light for a full rollout. We teamed up with the hotel’s contractor to make sure everything lined up with their bigger refurb plans. In just two days, our five-person crew wrapped 45 doors, 15 wardrobes and 15 entrance panels using custom-coloured LX Hausys architectural film.

We prepped each surface properly to get a smooth, long-lasting finish. The stark white doors were swapped for a softer grey tone, giving every room a warmer, more stylish feel.

Nothing was thrown out, and aside from the film, no new materials were needed. That meant way less waste and a lower carbon footprint, plus the place got a fresh, modern upgrade. The project saved money and proved that smart, sustainable refurbishments can hit both design and environmental targets.

Making refurbishment work smarter

Vinyl wrapping is not just a design choice. It proves that style and sustainability can work together. Businesses can reduce waste, preserve materials and still achieve an exceptional finish.

Rosie Christie

Co-Founder

Older than the rest of the team, but not necessarily wiser as she’d like to think. There’s not an activity under the sun that she’s not been willing to have a go at, resulting in a mediocre ukulele player, part-time blogger, one-time skydiver and an unfinished sitcom script. There’s no room for shades of grey in this half of the partnership; everything comes down to looking after people who are important.

Organising tradesmen is not a task for the fainthearted. But recruiting the right tradesmen, ones who align with our values and are highly skilled at what they do makes for a much more harmonious project management process. Rosie’s role begins with a meeting to discuss your requirements, providing you with a quotation and carries through to the on-site management of your project.

Jade Mitchell

Co-Founder

She’s the only Southerner on the team, but we try not to hold it against her too much. If anything, we’ve enjoyed introducing Jade to a vast number of pie shops now she’s a Northern resident. Standing at a phenomenal 5’2”, she is living proof that big things come in small packages; a mix of infectious enthusiasm, laughter, loyalty, authority and uncanny Theresa May impressions.

Communicating with our clients is Jade’s forte. Being highly organised and placing customer satisfaction at the forefront of everything she does means that from enquiry to completion, your queries will be dealt with efficiently. For an in depth knowledge of the material specification of our interior film, Jade is your woman. She will put your mind at rest that not only do we install this product, but we make sure that is the most suitable for your needs.
