Student Accommodation Bedroom Fitted Furniture Refurbishment

The Brief

Inspired Projects approached Fusion Surfaces during the refurbishment of a student accommodation building managed by Homes 4 Students. The goal was to modernise the bedrooms while keeping the existing furniture in place wherever possible. Rather than removing furniture that remained structurally sound, the client wanted to explore a more sustainable approach. The initial brief was therefore to create a sample show flat, demonstrating how architectural vinyl wrapping could refresh the fitted bedroom furniture and bathroom doors. The pilot project involved refurbishing a five-bedroom flat so the wider project team could assess the results before committing to a full rollout.

Location:
Preston
Duration:
4 Weeks
Sector:
Student Accommodation

The Solution

Before installation began, our team worked closely with the interior designer and other stakeholders involved in the project. Together we selected finishes that would modernise the furniture while aligning with the wider refurbishment scheme.

Samples were provided so the design team could evaluate colour and texture options before final approval. The chosen finish introduced a contemporary grey wood effect, designed to appeal to modern student living environments.

Once the show flat was completed and approved, the client proceeded with the full student accommodation bedroom fitted furniture refurbishment across the building.

The Process

Following the successful trial flat, the project expanded to 100 student bedrooms scheduled for refurbishment during the summer period.

A team of four installers carried out the work, with each installer completing one room per day. This structured approach allowed the team to move efficiently through the building while coordinating with painters, joiners and other contractors involved in the wider fit-out.

The refurbishment included wrapping a range of fitted furniture elements within each room:

  • Desks

  • Shelving units

  • Headboards

  • Wardrobes

  • Bathroom doors

Careful coordination ensured the work progressed smoothly alongside the other trades on site.

The Transformation

The completed refurbishment introduced a noticeably more contemporary look throughout the building.

The grey wood finish replaced dated furniture surfaces and worked alongside the new green feature walls and updated carpets. The refreshed interiors now better reflect the expectations of modern student tenants.

Through student accommodation bedroom fitted furniture refurbishment, the rooms achieved the appearance of newly installed furniture while retaining the existing fitted units.

Client Advantages

The project delivered several important benefits for Homes 4 Students:

  • 100 student bedrooms refurbished

  • Fitted furniture upgraded rather than replaced

  • Installation coordinated with a wider summer refurbishment programme

  • Significant cost savings compared with full furniture replacement

  • Reduced landfill by retaining existing furniture

The updated rooms proved highly successful, allowing the accommodation provider to increase the weekly rent for the refurbished bedrooms. The rooms also sold out ahead of the new academic year.

Conclusion

This project demonstrates how student accommodation bedroom fitted furniture refurbishment can deliver a modern and cost-effective upgrade for large student housing schemes.

By using architectural vinyl wrapping, Fusion Surfaces helped Homes 4 Students refresh their interiors, extend the lifespan of existing furniture and reduce environmental impact. The result is a contemporary student living environment delivered efficiently within a tight summer refurbishment programme.

Older than the rest of the team, but not necessarily wiser as she’d like to think. There’s not an activity under the sun that she’s not been willing to have a go at, resulting in a mediocre ukulele player, part-time blogger, one-time skydiver and an unfinished sitcom script. There’s no room for shades of grey in this half of the partnership; everything comes down to looking after people who are important.

Organising tradesmen is not a task for the fainthearted. But recruiting the right tradesmen, ones who align with our values and are highly skilled at what they do makes for a much more harmonious project management process. Rosie’s role begins with a meeting to discuss your requirements, providing you with a quotation and carries through to the on-site management of your project.

She’s the only Southerner on the team, but we try not to hold it against her too much. If anything, we’ve enjoyed introducing Jade to a vast number of pie shops now she’s a Northern resident. Standing at a phenomenal 5’2”, she is living proof that big things come in small packages; a mix of infectious enthusiasm, laughter, loyalty, authority and uncanny Theresa May impressions.

Communicating with our clients is Jade’s forte. Being highly organised and placing customer satisfaction at the forefront of everything she does means that from enquiry to completion, your queries will be dealt with efficiently. For an in depth knowledge of the material specification of our interior film, Jade is your woman. She will put your mind at rest that not only do we install this product, but we make sure that is the most suitable for your needs.
